Meet the Maker

Hello, I'm Jimmy Allen, owner of Allen InkWorks. I'm a retired police officer and a retired Veteran (US Army). I love making pens and I've been doing so for almost ten years now. I hope you browse the product catalog and feel free to follow my Instagram as I document the journey of creating a business in this busy world. I make all kinds of pens, please look at my store front to see what speaks to you. I specialize in making pens for our first responders and military community. Check in periodically as I introduce new products.

How it’s Made

Pen turning is the art of taking raw materials like wood, resin, or acrylic and crafting them into a beautiful, one-of-a-kind pen. The process starts by choosing a pen kit and a blank. The blank is then cut to size and drilled down the middle to fit a brass tube, which gets glued inside to give the pen its strength. Once the glue is set, the ends are trimmed perfectly flush so everything will fit together nicely later. The blank is mounted onto a lathe, where it’s carefully shaped using special turning tools until it matches the design and size needed. After shaping, the pen is sanded smooth, working through finer and finer grits, and then finished — either polished to a high shine or coated with a protective finish like CA glue. Once everything looks just right, the final step is assembling all the parts with a pen press, locking everything into place. What starts as a simple block of material is transformed into a functional piece of art — something you can hold, write with, and enjoy every day.
